The most expensive mistake in this trade is paying for an engine that is one code away from fitting. The VIN stops that. It is free to send, and we would rather answer it than collect a return pallet.
What the VIN settles
A BMW VIN identifies the factory engine, the gearbox family and whether the car is xDrive. That is the oil pan, the flywheel or flexplate, and the loom the replacement has to live with. A forum post about "a 2016 320d" is not the same fact. Two 2016 320ds can have different codes if one is early and one is late, or one is xDrive.
What to send
Send all 17 characters, not the last seven. A photo of the VIN plate on the scuttle or the door jamb is fine if the characters are sharp. Add the engine code if you can already see it, and say whether the gearbox is manual or automatic. If the old engine is out, a photo of its stamp is useful and the VIN is still required.
What happens next
We reply during working hours, Monday to Friday, 9:00 to 16:00 CET, with the code we would supply and a link to a unit if we have one. If we do not have that code, we say so. We do not offer a near-enough engine and leave the workshop to make it fit.

What we will not guess
We will not choose an engine from a photo of the badge, from the year alone, or from "it is the efficient one". Those descriptions cover two or three codes. If the VIN plate is missing, the registration document or a dealer printout of the vehicle data is the next best source. A guessed code that happens to start and then lights the dash is still the wrong engine.
Keep our reply with the order. If a different person in the workshop fits the engine, they should see the code we confirmed, not a remembered model name.
