What mileage is reasonable on a used BMW diesel

Mileage is one line on the listing, not the whole decision. How to read kilometres on an M57, N47, N57, B47 or B57 without buying a tired engine or refusing a good one.

Engines waiting in the Hamburg workshop

Buyers write to us with one number: 180,000 km, 90,000 km, 240,000 km. They want that number to mean good or bad. On a BMW diesel it does not. A 220,000 km M57 that had oil changes and a quiet chain can be a better engine than a 70,000 km N47 that rattled for a year.

Mileage is a clue

The kilometres on our listings are the kilometres recorded for that unit. They are not a warranty of how the car was driven. Short trips kill DPFs and dilute the oil. Long motorway trips are kinder to a diesel. The listing cannot show which life the car had. The oil, the chain noise and the manifold can.

What matters more

Match the engine code first. Then look at the failure that is common for that code: the N47 and early B47 chain, the N57 flaps and cooler, the M57 manifold, the B57 ancillaries. An engine with the right code and a dry sump beats a low-mile engine of the wrong code every time, because the wrong code will not run the car.

Metal in the oil, coolant in the oil, or a hole in the block ends the conversation whatever the mileage is.

A sensible range

For a daily diesel we are comfortable selling engines well past 150,000 km when the code is right and the engine is complete. Under 80,000 km is not automatically young if the car sat, or if the DPF never regenerated. Ask us for the photos of the actual unit. If the mileage on the listing does not match what you need for your own records, say so before you pay. We would rather sell the next engine than argue after the pallet has left.

How we write mileage on a listing

The figure on the listing is the figure recorded for that unit. We do not round it down to make the engine easier to sell, and we do not add a compression number we did not measure. If you need a lower-mile unit of the same code, ask. If we do not have one, the honest reply is that we do not, not a different code with a prettier number.

Service history you already have for the car stays with the car. The replacement engine brings its own past. Keep both files. A future buyer of the car will ask.
